Inducted on Monday, July 6, SGR is pleased to welcome its newest member, David Shostak. For more than 40 years, David has helped leaders deliver high‑stakes, high‑complexity projects — from pioneering GPS navigation systems which truly “changed the world” to guiding aerospace and commercial programs where millions of dollars and lives were on the line. He brings a rare combination of leadership expertise, technical depth, and communication skill. David understands every dimension of project management.

 

Although retired and recently relocated from Huntington Beach, CA to St. George, he continues to teach part‑time for the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and an MBA from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA.

 

David is an avid runner who has completed 21 marathons and is currently training for the 50th Annual St. George Half Marathon. While still settling into life in southern Utah, he has already embraced the community — taking his first-ever pickleball lesson (“I’m hooked, and I liked it so much I went right out and bought my own racquet!”), joining three hiking clubs, and now becoming part of the fabulous St. George Rotary.

 

David has two sons — one serving in the Army in Italy, the other lives in Huntington Beach — who have blessed him with three grandchildren.

 

Well-meaning Rotarians, trying to grow their club, will find more success “attracting” rather than recruiting new members. The difference is in recognizing the impact of Rotary is the ideal of service.  In other words, the more impactful service we do, the more people will find Rotary attractive … especially young service-minded men and women. This year, Utah Rotarians will focus on “creating lasting impact” as demonstrated by our commitment to organizing "bigger, better, bolder" projects in our club, community and the world. Have our efforts changed lives?  Is the world a better place because of Rotary?  The answer to both questions is a resounding “yes”… and, isn’t making an impact for good through the ideal of service what Rotary is really about?

 

Community Service Chair Reed Noble reported at last week's meeting, after a year in which SGR completed 27 "service above self" projects, he is looking for 4 NEW projects in RY2026-27.  International Co-Chair Chris Parker shared a discussion with his committee about the possibility of a 2nd (or alternating) trip to Guatemala in upcoming years as we consider how to "create lasting impact" in the community and the world in RY2026-27.
