On Monday, February 26, SGR will celebrate the 119th birthday of Rotary International (February 23, 1905); our club's 93rd birthday (January 29, 1931) and a few other important dates. Come one, come all for fun, prizes, information and a few surprises! See you at the Abbey Inn!
SGR's orange fundraiser has NOT been "a barrel of laughs." Our first order of 151 cases of sweet, delicious, easy-to-peel, thick-skinned California naval oranges was scheduled to arrive on Friday, Feb. 23 but instead they showed up on Thursday, Feb. 22 (at 6:30 a.m.) Over the course of three days (Thurs-Sat) some of the cases were moved up to 4 times (the WCSD Warehouse to the Utah Food Bank to Wild Coyote Foods to Linda and Ed's home in Bloomington) ... yes, there's a story to each move! Then it seems we over sold our oranges leaving us short by about 5 cases.
A super-duper special thanks to SG Rotarians Dale Desmond, Carl Lamar Rieck, Dave Watson, Reed Noble, Ed Sappington and Bountiful Rotarian Paul Summers for their help getting oranges into the hands of our buyers.
If you didn't get oranges in the first delivery, there's more coming in a couple of weeks.
Costs are $58 for a full case; $34 for a half case and $21 for a quarter case.
A few elementary schools have declined delivery this year (a sign of the technology age, no doubt), but most 3rd graders are still excited at the thought of having their very own paperback dictionary. Thanks, in this case, to Ken and Barbara Sizemore (pictured here with their 3rd grade grandson Rowan) for their "service above self" to 100 3rd grade students at Bloomington Elementary School.
Recently, SGR’s newsletter included information about the Paul Harris Fellow recognition for those Rotarians who commit to a one-time check or a cumulative monthly $85 toward a contribution of $1000 a year to The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund.
The PHF recognition was instituted in 1985 and since that time, 211 of SGR’s past and present members have given an estimated $332,000. In return, SGR has received 6 Global Grants (about $30,000 each to a total of $180,000); probably a dozen District Grants over the years averaging about $2000 each for another $24,000; and twice received District-designated Funding (DDF) in the amount of $10,000 per grant … for a total return, so far, of $224,000.
Thanks to all club members who have signed up to give $100 a year through EREY (“Every Rotarian, Every Year”); Polio Plus Society ($100 a year) for the eradication of polio; Paul Harris Society (a cumulative $1000); Paul Harris Fellow ($1000 annually). A very special thanks also goes to those who have achieved the designation of Major Donor (probably a dozen of our members has given a one-time gift or a cumulative $10,000. Our most recent major donor is Jenny Lee); or have remembered Rotary in their will to become a Benefactor.

We are now two months into 2024 without a single case of wild polio ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD! Projections are wild poiio will be FOREVER eradicated from the earth by 2026!
