Considering SGR was down 8 teams from our 2023 event, the 11th annual St. George Rotary Charity Golf Tournament was still a success with 12 teams and our 2nd best net earnings. Preliminary numbers show a net profit of $8,300!
Thank you all for the help to make this event happen. We had more prizes and giveaway items than ever. Thanks again to our main sponsor, Camping World and their generous donations and silent auction items and other donations provided by businesses in the community and for Rotarians who made it happen.
With an all time record of 11,866 senior athletes (about 1100 more than last summer's Paris Olympics) from 31 countries around the world, we were delighted to have over 100 volunteers to assemble the same number of HWSG's Welcome Bags on Wednesday, October 2 at the Dixie Convention Center. Only 10 Rotarians - 2 from St. George Sunrise and 8 from SGR - were there but because we had so many people willing to help, we passed along about 15 to help with the same project for the St. George Marathon and 5 were huge helps to The Games Gift Shop.
SGR and friends of Rotary (numbered "north of 40" according to Reed Noble) began Saturday, October 5 at milepost 18 (the Ledges offramp) with breakfast burritos while we waited for the 600 participants in a 5K race, followed by almost 2500 runners in a half marathon ... followed by an estimated 5500 competing in the 47th annual St. George Marathon.
Thanks to President Dave who spent the morning as Chef Dave for breakfast ... AND for rounding up about 20 young men and young women who added a whole lot of enthusiasm to the goings-on.
Another "service above self" project on the books!
Saturday, October 5 included two "service above self" projects ... the day began at milepost 18 (the Ledges offramp) for the St. George Marathon and ended at the Red Cliffs Mall where the community was invited to enjoy the 2nd annual "Rev'd Up 4 Rotary" car show. Chairman Dale had more than 35 vehicles, food trucks of various varieties, and booths in place representing our various sponsors ... and District 5420's "famous" iron lung giving us the opportunity to talk to those in attendance about polio ... most who had never heard of it.
It was a double-fun day. Thanks to all who showed up and helped out.
There is no way to put a positive spin on this week's report of four new cases of wild polio with paralysis diagnosed in Pakistan. This brings the worldwide total to 40 so far in 2024.
This wicked and crippling - even sometimes fatal - virus MUST BE ERADICATED! It is believed if we end this campaign, there will be an estimated 200,000 cases within a decade.
But currently, only 53.3% of the world's 1.4 million Rotarians are giving to the eradication of polio.
Please won't you join the Polio Plus Society by committing just $8.50 a month or $100 a year until the wild polio virus is finally and forever eradicated? It can't happen unless we all jump into the fight!!!
