SGR's dictionary work project in preparation for distribution to 1247 3rd graders in 15 Washington County elementary schools will be on Monday, October 27. Join us at Reed's office located at 35 S. 400 West, #200 (south of Smith's on Bluff Street) where box lunches will be provided ... and when we have completed this "service above self" project, dictionaries can be picked-up for distribution.
Thanks to eight SG Rotarians (Dale Desmond, Collin Davis, James Jackson, Kurt Johnson, Jeff Hogrefe [right off the plane from their summer vacation in Washington], Ed and Linda Sappington ... and Brady Barker, one of our three newest members), all who took time out of their busy lives to volunteer for three shifts on behalf of the PGA TOUR at Black Desert Resort. A few "friends of Rotary" also signed up ... while Chris Parker and John White, represented Bank of Utah and Steve Brough was on hand from Zions Bank.
Unfortunately, we did not reach our goal of 20 volunteers needed to manage tournament spectators on this incredibly beautiful 7500-yard course "sculpted into Southern Utah's awe-inspiring landscape of black lava fields and vermillion red cliffs."
Though St. George Rotary Foundation will still receive a check from the PGA, it will certainly be much smaller than last year's record-breaking contribution from the PGA! (See more at Rotary Club of St. George on Facebook).
On Thursday, Mother Nature put on a show
The teams arrived in a parade of white vans
Kenny Ball was our club's team captain
PGA uniforms were of nice quality and made us easy to find among the fans
Chris Parker and John White wore the Bank of Utah uniform on behalf of their employer as well as the event's sponsor
Jeff Hogrefe flew home after a summer in Washington in time to volunteer for the PGA!
Friday, October 24 was World Polio Day, so designated by Rotary International in 2012 (see this week's trivia question to know why).
We’re closer than ever to eradicating polio, but we’re not done yet. We still need funds to continue immunizations and surveillance efforts with all donations matched 2:1 by the Bill Gates Foundation, which triples your donations and your impact.
After decades of progress in the fight to eradicate polio, now is not the time to retreat – it's the time to recommit to fulfill our shared promise of a polio-free future for children everywhere. Join us in calling for continued action to achieve a polio-free world by sharing information about this devastating disease, found on the END POLIO NOW website, with your friends and neighbors on your social media sites. There is still work to be done before polio is eradicated – finally and forever!!!
For just $8.50 a month - or $100 annually - you can join the PolioPlus Society and when people ask why you are a Rotarian, you can say, "I am helping eradicate polio from the earth!"
Utah Rotary's DG Suzanne's goal for D5420 is a net increase of 200 new members by June 30, 2026. So, who do you know who should be a member of
St. George Rotary Club?
Rotary Question of the Week
World Polio Day (October 24) was established by Rotary International to commemorate this event in the life of the individual who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.
Approaching World Polio Day on Friday, October 24, the Rotary world held its collective breath in hopes no new cases would be diagnosed. Alas - while Pakistan is holding its own for now - there were two more Afghani children identified, bringing our worldwide total in 2025 to 38 ... 9 in Afghanistan and 29 in Pakistan. See more below!
